PHEASANT STOCKING IN THE U.S. 2018
Twenty-one states stock pheasants. Most of these states have been stocking pheasant for more than a century.
New York
Since 1908. 30,000 adult pheasant are released over the month of October on land open to public hunting across the state. Because NY sells so many hunting licenses, the cost per hunter is a little over one dollar and this is probably the reason no special permit or stamp has been implemented.
New Jersey
1908. 50,000 adult pheasants stocked from October for dog training, and during pheasant hunting season in November and December. NJ also stocks bobwhite during hunting season at two release sites. The current fee for a NJ pheasant /bobwhite stamp required to hunt them on release sites is $40. This program has existed since the early 1900s in NJ and has been 100% user-paid through the stamp revenue for many years.
Pennsylvania
1915. Until 2017, no pheasant permit was required. However to defray the cost of pheasant production and orientate the cost towards the user, a $25 permit is now required in addition to a small game hunting license. PA releases over 200,000 adult pheasant on its State Game Lands across the state that are open to public hunting.
Idaho
About 6,084 hunters purchase $24 pheasant stamps which generates $144,500 toward the state of Idaho’s pheasant stocking program.
Nebraska
Although located in the “Pheasant Belt”, Nebraska stocks pheasant to foster a pheasant hunting tradition on Thanksgiving.
